Quotes

These are a collection of quotes I’ve come across that I think people can learn from.

“Be kind, for everyone you meet is fighting a battle you know nothing about.”-Ian Maclaren (John Watson)

Take Away: Everyone is going through trials and stresses in their life, it doesn’t make it okay to treat people badly just because you didn’t know about them. It’s human nature to hide your struggles behind a laugh and smiling face, so just keep that at the back of your mind.

“If you want to be part of a team, no job is too small or too big.”-Nurse Jesse (Code Black)

Take Away: There will always be tasks that you think is too much too handle or too simple for you to do, the fact to that matter is someone has to do them rgeardless. Instead of leaving it for another person, take charge and get it done.

“Smart luck is when you work your ass off, so when the oppurtunity presents itself, you don’t need to pray for dumbluck.”-Dr Savetti (Code Black)

Take Away: Work really hard so that you don’t have to cling on to the hope that the task is really easy because you were unprepared.

“No one is unteachable, everyone is a lock, you just have to figure out their combination.”-Dr Hudson (Code Black)

Take Away: This is applicable in many other aspects unrelated to learning/teaching. When it comes to communication, different people behave differently, respond differently and interpret differently. So you shouldn’t look through the lens that if someone seems disinterested in what you had to say, maybe it’s not the fact that they just don’t like you, maybe you should just try speaking another way.

“Sometimes the way to be brave is to pretend to be brave.”-C.S. Lewis

Take Away: It’s a common misconception that everything good should just comes naturally and that if it doesn’t that means you’re not good enough. But a lot of times it the very act of it not having a naturally attributed quality but actively putting yourself in that position as if you had that quality is what makes you genuinely have said quality. Much like the old adage, “Fake it till you make it.”

“If you save a life, you’re a hero. If you save a thousand, you’re a nurse.”-Unknown

Take Away: The nursing profession often goes undervalued and under appreciated, but don’t let that diminish the importance of the work that you’re doing.

“The most important thing in communication is to hear what isn’t being said.”-Peter Drucker

Take Away: The most important part about communication isn’t about hearing, it’s about understanding. People’s body language and facial expressions often contradict their spoken words or sometimes they don’t know how to accurately convey themselves. This is when understanding people becomes a really important quality for nurses, who’s job it is to look after patients. Some patients don’t have the capacity to communicate their pain, issues or conditions, so it’s your job to understand them.

“Before you speak ask yourself if what you are going to say is true, is kind, is necessary, is helpful… if the answer is no, maybe what you are about to say should be left unsaid.”-Bernard Meltzer

Take Away: Sometimes people get carried away and start talking about things they shouldn’t be talking about. This acts as a filter for anything negative or meaningless.

“Be curious, not judgemental.”-Ted Lasso

Take Away: It’s a slight attitude change that makes a big difference on how you interact with people. Rather than being judgemental and attack someone, if you follow through with a curious approach and communicate with people with an intention to come to a common undstanding, you methods will of communicating will adjust such that the person on the other side won’t come across as defensive and tend to sway to ideas. There may also be times where you are in the wrong, and this attitude puts you in a position to learn rather than judge.

“The man who asks a question is a fool for a mintute, the man who does not ask is a fool for life.”-Confucius

Take Away: Everytime you ask a question, that is one less thing that you no longer “don’t know” about. Cease the oppurtunity to expand you knowledge and expertise. Its better to ask a stupid question than to remain stupid.

“Good health is like a crown on the head of a well person, but only the sick can see it.”-Imam Ali ibn Abi Talib

Take Away: Most people are guilty of taking their health for granted until the moment their health is compromised. Look after the good things you have today. There’s a saying in healthcare that goes, “the first vital sign you check is yours,” shedding light on the fact that as healthcare workers we look after people, but it’s also just as important to look after yourselves. In order to help people you need to help yourself first.

“Avoiding something out of fear is like refusing to ask a question just because you don’t know the answer. It’s counterintuitive and only holds you back.”-Danish Skymmar

Take Away: The answer to being afraid of something isn’t to run away from it, it’s to actively confront it so that it no longer becomes a hindrance that gets in your way. Use fear as a motivation that guides you to improvement, rather than a sickly feeling that lingers at the back of your mind.

“There’s gonna be times where there’s nobody to back you up, when the only thing you have is your eyes and your instincts. It’s important to trust yourself.”-Nurse Jesse (Code Black)

Take Away: As much as teamwork is important to, being able to work independently is just as important. Making critical decisions on your own and knowing when to take charge in the heat of the moment, can be the difference between life and death.
